My Twitter Tips for New Users
text
New to Twitter? It can be a strange strange place, here are some tips so you don't have
to read 100 blog posts on how to get followers/use twitter/be a social media expert.

Twitter is about sharing and connecting with new people, keep that in mind at all times.
You want to provide value to your following but also provide character, its a tricky
balance ;) I generally follow back anyone who follows me, as long as they are posting
meaningful content, I always try to expand my horizons.

1. Setup your profile! A meaningful avatar [preferably a real photo of you], a background,
a short bio and a web link will do you wonders. People on twitter want to get to know you
but if you never take the time to setup your page, why should they take the time to get to know
you?

2. Start at http://search.twitter.com - punch in some topics you enjoy and find people
posting relevant content about them, follow these people. If you are posting similar
relevant content, they will most likely follow you back :)

3. Share what you find on the web, from links to articles to pics and more, share these
with your network, it will help build your "media channel", people will follow you to keep
up with the cool stuff you're finding and sharing. I prefer bit.ly for link
sharing/shortening.

4. Checkout some of the tools to help you find other cool people to follow such as
Mr.Tweet - http://mrtweet.net/ and Twubble - http://crazybob.org/twubble/

5. You want to try and maintain a sane follower/following ratio, I try to keep the numbers
within 70 or so of each other, so if I have 100 followers, I will follow up to 170 people.
When 'tweeps' see accounts following alot of people with no followers, they are usually
tossed in the 'spam bot' bucket and left for dead.

6. Participate, participate, participate. Something is going on in the twittosphere every
second of the day, you don't need there for all of it, but staying involved will help you in
your quest for the ever-growing network. #followfriday is now a ttwitter tradition,
share people you think are worth following and you will see it comes back around.
Read more about that here- http://learntoduck.com/micah/follow-friday

7. Terms - learn the terminology of twitter-
RT = 'retweet' or reposting someone else's tweet such as RT @danosphere would be
reposting a tweet from @danosphere.
Replies = @username this sends a PUBLIC reply to the user.
Direct Message - DM @username this sends a PRIVATE message to the user, they
have to be following you and vice versa for this to work.

8. Tools - Here are some cool tools to make twittering easier- Tweetdeck, a twitter client
for the desktop with grouping, is my personal fav, google around and you can find a
lot more both desktop and web based.

That's it! Remember twitter is supposed to be fun! If you're in it just for the followers
then you may want to re-evaluate your motives
